Hello /r/tractors, A few years ago, my parents and I went in together and bought some land out in the country. They live on one side and I live on the other, and as part of that we had a lot of maintenance to do and bought tractors. My dad got a new John Deere compact (don't remember the exact model number), and I got an older Kubota L3200f. I've noticed a difference in our engine throttle philosophies when using the tractors, and I thought I would ask you guys which was best. When doing work with the tractor, like using the front end loader or bush hogging or something, my dad runs his tractor with high RPMs. I'm not going to say it's full throttle, but it's close. On the other hand, if I'm doing light-duty work like mowing the yard with the finish mower or something, then I tend to keep the RPMs pretty low, not the minimum but definitely on the lower side. If I need the power for something then I'll give it more throttle, but for just cruising around mowing fairly short grass I figure lower RPMs means less fuel used and hopefully less wear and tear on the engine. Does this matter? Is one way better than the other. I've always thought that my way would save fuel and be easier on the engine, but I could sort of see that if the tractor/pto is expecting to work at a certain RPM range and I'm operating lower than that then maybe that's not good for it. I'm just curious what you guys think. Thanks, derrick81787 **Edit:** It sounds like I should probably raise my RPMs a little bit. I don't intentionally lug the engine, but I usually try to set it just a little above the point where that would happen. It sounds like avoiding accidentally lugging the engine is more important than trying not to run it any higher than I need to, though.
