I bought a John Deere 4600 Walk-Behind Mower in April 2010. The reverse has never worked good and if you are not aware of it, the machine will lock in forward and you have to stop the machine and pull it away from the object you are mowing close to or just pull the machine with wheels locked in place and this leaves marks on your yard. To preface, I don't know shit about tractors outside of what you'd expect an engineer to know about machinery. My girlfriend's dad has a 4600 and a family friend of theirs was using it to till my garden. When he finished up, he stood up and got out, at which point the tractor shut off. I believe he mentioned that he disengaged the PTO before standing up, but I'm not exactly sure about that. Would the tractor turn off if you stood up when the PTO isn't engaged? After that, he couldn't get the tractor to even turn over. We've done some basic troubleshooting and at this point I'm reasonably certain that the safety switch under the seat is not an issue. Any other ideas on on what's stopping it from starting? My girlfriend's dad is a busy guy and it would be nice if I could get this worked out. Please help me score some points with my probable future father-in-law. Thanks in advance.

It's getting colder and winter is right around the corner. We had our first taste of a winter storm here in NJ yesterday. I started my JD4600 this morning to warm up. Had it going for a good 15 minutes in about 34 degrees snow/rain mix. Everything sounded good, she wasn't struggling at all. Moved the bucket up, raised the RPMs and it sounded fine. Lowered the RPMs and tried to move it forward and it stalled out. Turned it on again, tried again and she died. Now she won't even turn over. Any ideas? I tried to jump it with my Subaru Outback. I tried to connect power directly to the starter to bypass the battery and neither worked. Fuel in the filter looks good, too. Update: Swapped out safety relay, cleaned the battery terminals and she lives again!

My wife recently accepted a General Manager position at a RV park and does not have a full-time/familiar maintenance employee. I am pretty handy and am able to learn as I go, or watch instructional videos to solve things. I am currently stumped. This is a John Deere 4600 (unsure year) that is leaking, what looks like, hydraulic fluid from this rear location underneath. I am unsure exactly how to fix this. The front and back lift will hold their position with the engine turned off, so if I'm understanding correctly, there's not a leak in the lines? I am trying to see if this is something that I am able to repair myself. Attached is the location of the leak. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Please help me figure out what is wrong: Hi, I have a John Deere 4600 compact that was operating fine this evening for over an hour. I turned it off for a few minutes, then when I tried to start it again, the lights on the dash came on and I heard a single click. The lights went out and the tractor engine did not turn over. I turned the key off and back on. The lights in the dash came back on, tried to start, same thing... single clicking noise and then everything was dead. Now nothing happens with the key at all. The head, tail, and hazard lights won't come on. There is power at the fuse box for the key switch and interlock, but nothing below that on the fuse box (light fuses have no power). The battery is fine and there is power at the starter. I didn't try any relays, but I couldn't find any blown fuses or loose wires in the dash. What do you think the problem is?
