Starter non-responsive, no voltage at trigger
high

Starter fails to engage after 3-day parking period. No voltage measured at starter trigger when key turned to start position. Manual voltage application to trigger allows solenoid and starter to function, suggesting ignition circuit fault rather than starter motor failure.

Found a JD 5400 with detached backhoe for $15K no hangers
low

Here's the updated version: Follow-up on previous post: [https://www.reddit.com/r/tractors/comments/1pozls4/is\_this\_1993\_jd\_5400\_a\_good\_deal\_first\_tractor\_18/](https://www.reddit.com/r/tractors/comments/1pozls4/is_this_1993_jd_5400_a_good_deal_first_tractor_18/) Looking for a TLB for my 18-acre property. Found what seemed like a great deal but learned that the backhoe is detached and the tractor doesn't have mounts for it. Seller says it came off the same model tractor though. **The Listing: 1993 John Deere 5400 - $15,000 FIRM** * 68 HP, MFWD, 12-speed transmission * Front end loader * Hours: UNKNOWN (meter shows 1012.6 but seller says unreliable) * 4 rear remotes, no leaks, PTO works * Implements included: brush hog, York rake, post hole digger, wood splitter, back blade (bent) **The catch:** The backhoe is detached and missing the tractor-side mounts. Seller says it came off the same model tractor and is the "A10 backhoe." He claims it just needs "side plates" to mount it. **The Problem** I believe the seller is incorrect. The Model 49 backhoe (which fits 5000 series tractors) uses a subframe mounting system with hangers - not side plates. Side plates are for the Model 47/48 backhoes on compact tractors (4x00 series). The correct mounting parts from PC9413: LVA13820 hanger - $2,312 LVA13818 hanger - $2,192 Fittings/hardware - \~$300-500 Roughly $4,800-5,000 in parts alone, plus whatever it costs to install (front hanger bolts to the clutch housing). **Total investment:** $15,000 + $5,000+ parts + install = $20,000+ for a 32-year-old tractor with unknown hours and a backhoe that may or may not actually fit. If the backhoe was already mounted, this would be pretty solid. But with it not having the hangers I'm not so sure. Am I thinking through this right? Should I keep waiting for a better deal or am I being overly cautious? This would be my first tractor, not afraid to get my hands dirty but also quickly getting in over my head.

John Deere 5400 Starter Issues
low

Hey y'all, Certainly not a farmer, not even a tractor owner (yet....check cleared today...but thats a separate de) but just moved onto some family land and was using my uncles JD 5400 tractor for some yardwork. Left it parked for about the last 3 days. Ran and started fine consistently. All of a sudden last night I went to move it, turned the key, starter tried to turn for about half a second then died. From there on out, nothing. Today, diagnosing further, here's what I've got: 1) key position does nothing. No clicking, not tries to turn over 2) it has diesel 3) it's in park.....made that mistake a few weeks ago and thought I broke it when it wouldn't start lol 4) tapping the starter with a hammer didn't free it up. 5) when measuring voltage at the trigger in the starter when the key is in start, I get no voltage 6) when I jump battery to trigger, it sounds like the solenoid and starter both work, but can't get it to turn over My dad and I have concluded that its something with the ignition, but we don't know where to begin. Going to tear the dash apart this weekend to inspect. Haven't dropped the starter out yet. That'll be next week's project if I can't get this resolved. Anyone have any ideas what else we could try or what may be the issue? Thanks!
