Known Issues
Diesel engine produces white smoke under load with significant blow-by, causing oil to be expelled from dipstick. Owner suspects stuck or broken piston rings. Oil pressure gauge drops when engine reaches operating temperature and sits at red line at idle.
Tractor stuck in 2nd gear after PTO shear pin breakage. Shifter will not engage other gears (High, Neutral, Low) and moves barely. Issue persists with engine off and PTO engaged/disengaged.
Tractor developed sudden knocking noise and low power while operating. Fuel pump was shooting oil from weep hole. After fuel pump replacement, knocking persisted despite normal oil pressure. User suspects possible injector-related issue or air in fuel lines.
Manual steering exhibits approximately 1/4 turn of slop, primarily originating from steering column rather than steering gear. Owner uncertain whether $40 steering column rebuild kit will resolve issue or if worn gear set requires more expensive repair.
Hey r/tractors — I've been putting together a parts cross-reference database for the older Massey Ferguson models and wanted to get this community's eyes on the data before I go too much further. It's at ironreference.com. Here's what it covers so far: * OEM part number → cross-references for Wix, Fram, Baldwin, NAPA, Timken * Serial number → model year and engine variant * Service intervals with hour schedules and fluid specs * Torque specs — head bolts, valve clearance, main bearings, injector pressure * Hydraulic troubleshooting — pick a symptom, get likely causes and part numbers Models covered: MF 135, 165, 265, 290, and 390. All data sourced from workshop manuals and verified against supplier catalogs. Every row has a confidence level — if something isn't verified, it says so. Mainly posting because I'd rather have someone here catch a wrong part number now than have somebody order the wrong filter. If you spot anything off, I want to know.
