Known Issues
I recently purchased a property with close to 8 acres. The property is mixed between approximately .5 acres of lawn and the remainder wooded. The wooded portion has a pretty steep hill (from my rough estimate about 25-30%) and a lot of undergrowth. I have no experience with tractors and have no idea what to look for. I will need something that can handle both the maintanence of the lawn as well as clearing brush, trees, and debris, and I imagine moving dirt would be a necessity. From what I've gathered so far I should aim for roughly 30hp with mid and reat PTOs. 4WD seems to be a no brainer, and with the steep hill a heavy, low center of gravity tractor would be beneficial for traction. I don't think I want to buy new as the prices are far too high. If I look to used, there is such a range of pricing, models, and conditions that I'm utterly lost. For instance, this [2002 MF 1429](https://www.mgdtractor.com/inventory/?/listing/for-sale/246657809/2002-massey-ferguson-1429-less-than-40-hp-tractors?dlr=1&dscompanyid=4974&settingscrmid=416197) looks like it could fit the bill. It looks like it is in relatively good condition, has low hours, and has two implements which would assist with the tasks I plan on taking on. Replacing the injection pump could cost upwards of 1k, but if I just need to align timing it could be far less expensinve. But, if I think skeptically about it, a good tractor with a simple fix for a low price would have been sold already. What am I missing? I honestly don't know where to begin, what to look for, what to look out for, or what a good price actually is. Any knowledge or experience any of you fine people are able to share would be super appreciated. Thanks!
